Thing 1 & Thing 2 Beanies

After making a few Seuss-inspired things for my son's teacher, I decided I needed to make some Seuss-ish beanies. So, I made these two Thing 1 & Thing 2 beanies....

Beanie

The beanie was made with my General Beanie Pattern, using a size H hook. I used I Love This Yarn in Red for the main color with Caron's Simply Soft in Blue Mint as a border. (Adding the Circle Applique shown below).



Circle Applique (my original pattern)
Use a size H hook and size 4 worsted yarn in white & Black (I used I Love This Yarn's White& Black). Start off with white

Chain 2
Round 1: 6 SC in the second chain from the hook, join to form a circle, chain 1 (6 SC)
Round 2: 2 SC in each around, join, chain 1 (12 SC)
Round 3: (DC in first, 2 DC in next) repeat around, join, chain 1
Round 4: (DC in first 2, 2 DC in next) repeat around, join, chain 1
Round 5: (DC in first 3, 2 DC in next) repeat around, join, chain 1
Round 6: (DC in first 4, 2 DC in next) repeat around, join, chain 1
Round 7: (DC in first 5, 2 DC in next) repeat around, join, chain 1
Round 8: (DC in first 6, 2 DC in next) repeat around, join, chain 1
Round 9: (SC in first 7, skip next) repeat around, join
Round 10 (in Black): Chain 1, SC in each around, join
Finish off, leaving a long tail for sewing onto beanie.
Finishing: Stitch, by hand, the letters and numbers onto circle. Then, sew onto beanie.

Cat in the Hat Themed Scarf

Another of the Cat in the Hat themed gifts for my son's teacher, a scarf....

Scarf
(originally found here, but edited it to make more sense)
Use a size I hook and size 4 worsted yarn in Red & White

Chain 20
Row 1 (in White): SC in third chain from hook, (chain 1, skip 1, SC in next) repeat across row, chain 2 (counts as ch-space here and throughout), turn, (10 SC)
Row 2 (in White):  (SC in next ch-space, chain 1) repeat across row, SC in last ch-space (10 SC)
(Carry over you yarn when doing color changes, don't worry about cutting off and weaving in every time.)
Row 3 (in Red): Chain 2, turn, (SC in next ch-space, chain 1) repeat across row, SC in last ch-space (10 SC)
Row 4 (in Red): Chain 2, turn, (SC in next ch-space, chain 1) repeat across row, SC in last ch-space (10 SC)
Row 5-End: Repeat Rows 3-4, alternating colors every 2 rows until piece measures 60” long, end with 2 rows of White.
Finish off.




Fringe
Use size 4 worsted yarn in Blue (I used Simply Caron's Blue Mint because it looked the most Seuss-ish)

Cut four 8" lengths of yarn, line them up and fold over to find the middle. Grab your hook and insert it into the space between SC stitches on the bottom of the scarf, pull a loop through of the blue (at that middle point of your blue pieces). This will leave you with a loop of blue on one side and the 8 ends of blue on the other side. Now you'll need to use two fingers and put through the loop, grab the 8 ends & pull them all through the loop. Pull tight so that this does not unravel. You will do 8 of these on each end.

Cat in the Hat Themed Coasters

Following my Cat in the Hat themed gifts for my sons teacher, I made a coaster out of a pattern I found but transformed it into Cat in the Hat colors...

Striped Coasters 
(originally found here, edited it a bit for my needs & wrote it in US terms)
Use a size E hook and  size 4 worsted yarn in Red, White, & Blue (I found Simply Soft Caron's Blue Mint to be the best Seuss-ish color); and pull stitches TIGHT.


Chain 5, join to form circle
Round 1 (in Red): Chain 3 (counts as DC here and throughout), 11 DC 11 into loop, join (12 DC)
Round 2 (in White): Chain 3,  DC into same stitch, 2 DC in each around, join (24 DC)
Round 3 (in Red): Chain 3, (2 DC in next, DC in next) repeat around, join (36 DC)
Round 4 (in White): Chain 3, DC in next, 2 DC in next,  (DC in next 2, 2 DC in next) repeat around, join (48 DC)
Round 5 (in Red): Chain 3, DC in next 2, 2 DC in next, (DC in next 3, 2 TC in next) repeat around, join (60 DC)
Round 6 (in Blue): Chain 1, SC in each around (60 SC)
Finish off.

(Start with Red, leave a long tail about 6" long) Chain 2

Round 1 (in Red): 4 SC in second chain from hook, join to form a circle (4 SC)

Round 2 (in Red): Chain 1, 2 SC in each around, join (8 SC)

Round 3 (in Red): Chain 1, working in BACK LOOPS ONLY for row: SC in each around, join (8 SC)

Round 4 (in Red): Chain 1, SC in each around, join (8 SC)

Round 5 (in Red): Chain 1, SC in each around, join (drop red yarn but do not cut and do not crochet over, pick up at Round 8) (8 SC)

Round 6 (in White): Chain 1, SC in each around, join (8 SC)

Round 7 (in White): Chain 1, SC in each around, join (drop white yarn but do not cut and do not crochet over, pick up at Round 11) (8 SC)

Round 8-9 (in Red): Chain 1, SC in each around, join (8 SC)

Round 10 (in Red): Chain 1, SC in each around, join (drop red yarn but do not cut and do not crochet over, pick up at Round 13) (8 SC)

Round 11-12 (in White): Chain 1, repeat Rounds 6-7 (drop white yarn but do not cut and do not crochet over, pick up at Round 16)

Rounds 13-14 (in Red): Chain 1, repeat Rounds 8-9

Round 15 (in Red): Chain 1, repeat Round 10 (drop red yarn but do not cut and do not crochet over)

Round 16 (in White): Chain 2, working in FRONT LOOPS ONLY: HDC in same as joining, 2 HDC in each around, join (16 HDC) Finish off white yarn.

Bending the hat: Pull on the original tail of red yarn to flatten the top of the hat.  Continue pulling to cause the hat to bend a bit at the top and tie a knot to the working strand of red to hold the bend in the hat in place. Stuff the remaining tail up inside of the hat.

Closing the Bottom of the Hat: place the bare hook into the open loop of one of the stitches on the bottom of the hat and through the matching stitch on the opposite side.  Pull the working strand of red up through these stitches. Working in matching stitches across the bottom of the hat continue to close by slip st. When the bottom is closed finish off.

Tail: Attach blue yarn with a slip stitch to the bottom red seam of the hat (the part you just closed). Chain 45. Finish off.

Fringe: Cut 2 8” strands of each color. Insert hook through the last chain stitch. Fold the set of 6 strands in half to form a loop. Pull the loop through the last chain stitch far enough so that you can insert your thumb and forefinger. Grab the loose tail of the 6 strands and pull them through the loop.  Pull tight. If you have loose loops in the knot portion of your fringe just pull individual strands until they tighten up. Trim to even.

Cat in the Hat Themed Cup Cozy

Another Cat in the Hat themed gift for my son's teacher, a cup cozy....

On this one, I combined a couple of different patterns. I used this cup cozy pattern, just using the cozy part of the instructions of course. And, I used this Cat in the Hat Applique Pattern.

Cup Cozy

Use a size G hook and size 4 worsted yarn in Black.

Chain 13

Row 1: SC in second chain from hook and in each across, Chain 1, turn (12 SC)

Row 2: SC in BACK LOOPS ONLY of each across, Chain 1, turn (12 SC)

Row 3-End: Repeat Row 2 until piece measures 8” long. 

Finishing: Slip st, working through top of last row and remaining loop of row of foundation chains, slip st in each across. Finish off.

Cat in the Hat Applique

Use a size E hook and size 4 worsted yarn in Red & White.

Row 1 (in White): Chain 11, SC in second chain from hook & in the next 8, (SC, slip st) in last, turn, slip st in first 3 (10 SC)
Row 2 (in Red): Chain 2, HDC in same as joining and next 5 (6 HDC)
Row 3 (in White): Chain 2, turn, HDC in each across (6 HDC)
Row 4 (in Red): Chain 2, turn, HDC in each across (6 HDC)
Row 5 (in White): Chain 2, turn, HDC in each across (6 HDC)
Row 6 (in Red): Chain 2, turn, HDC in each across (6 HDC)
Finish off, leaving long tail for sewing onto cozy.

Teacher Appreciation: Dr Seuss Gift Basket

My son just started school last week for the first time! Well, while meeting his teacher, I realized that her room is HEAVILY decorated in a Dr Seuss theme. I decided to make her a few gifts in appreciation for what she does as a teacher (since their jobs are so thankless), and decided on a Cat in the Hat theme. So, these are what I came up with (the book is just for the photo, I didn't get that for her)....

I found a few patterns online and edited/merged them to make (from left to right, top to bottom in picture) a cup cozy, a bookmark, a coaster, and a scarf.
