Bee Beanies

(Every pattern that I currently have available to download is in Word format and is downloadable on my Scribd. If I do not have a pattern there, then I do not have a downloadable version of it. (I always turn my beanies inside out after completing, to use that side as the “right side”, because I feel it always comes out looking better on that side)

***Note on my beanie patterns: I've realized that I had learned the DC stitch wrong, so my beanie pattern was done to the scale of my wrong stitch instead (which is really a long-DC stitch). So, you might want to do long-DC stitches, OR add a row or two to the bottom of the beanie. Also, my "Chain 2" NEVER counts as a DC in any of my patterns.***

Stitch Abbreviations:

CH= Chain

SC= Single Crochet

DC= Double Crochet

SL ST= Slip Stitch

ST= Stitch(es)

You will need size 4 Worsted weight yarn in Black & Yellow (I used I Love This Yarn). I usually use the size H hook on everything, but I also work my stitches pretty tightly. (Just remember that changes hook changes the size of your work)

Size: 0-3 Months
Chain 6, join to form ring, Chain 2

Round 1: 11 DC in ring, join to first DC, chain 2
Round 2: 2 DC in each around, join, chain 2 (22 DC)
Round 3 (make in Black): (DC in first, 2 DC in next) repeat around, join, chain 2 (33 DC)
Round 4: (DC in first 2, 2 DC in next) repeat around, join, chain 2 (44 DC)
Round 5: DC in each around, join, chain 2 (44 DC)
Round 6 (make in Black): DC in each around, join, chain 2 (44 DC)

Earflaps for 0-3 Months - Preschooler

Starting at where you finished off your beanie, skip the right amount of stitches for your size beanie and start Earflap 1 in next stitch. Skip 6 stitches for 0-3 Months size, skip 7 for 3-6 Months size, skip 8 for 6-9 Months size, skip 9 for 9-12 Months size, & skip 10 for Toddler/Preschooler sizes.

Earflap 1:
Row 1: Chain 1, SC in next 10, chain 1, turn (10 SC)
Row 2: SC decrease, SC in next 6, SC decrease, chain 1, turn (8 ST)
Row 3: SC across, chain 1, turn (8 SC)
Row 4: SC decrease, SC in next 4, SC decrease, chain 1, turn (6 ST)
Row 5: SC across, chain 1, turn ( 6 SC)
Row 6: SC decrease, SC in next 2, SC decrease, chain 1, turn (4 ST)
Row 7: SC across, chain 1, turn (4 SC)
Row 8: Make 2 SC decreases, (If you are doing braided ties: at this point chain 4, turn, and sl st to last stitch. Finish off here & start Earflap 2) chain 1, turn (2 ST)

Edging/Border

It's best when you have added earflaps to do a border in that same color of the earflaps first, and then another border in the contrasting color. This will give you a better looking edge, taking care of any weird gaps caused by different size stitches. So, chain 1 (after last stitch from earflap) & then SC around entire beanie in that same color, join to first SC. Then change to the contrasting color (Ishowed below how I do that) & SC around entire beanie again (make sure that if you are doing Regular Ties, that you do them at the points of the earflaps starting immediately after changing colors for second border)

Changing colors: End your last row by starting an SC into last stitch, but do not pull through loops on hook. So with the color your ending: yarn over, insert hook into last stitch, pull up a loop. Then get your second color: yarn over, pull through both loops on hook, slip stitch to first SC of round. Color change complete! Now, Chain 1 with this new color and continue with your border.

***I TURN MY BEANIES INSIDE OUT AT THIS POINT, OR WHEN I'M DONE BECAUSE I FEEL THE "INSIDE" WHILE YOU'RE WORKING ACTUALLY TURNS OUT LOOKING THE BEST.***

Ties

Braided Ties

Cut yarn out of desired colors (1-3 colors) in 36" strands (9 total). Fold in half and grab at the loop that forms at the halfway point. Pull that loop through the ch-4 space from last row on Earflap. Open loop up and pull through the strands left (this makes a sort of knot to keep the braid on there and will double your strands, leaving you with 18).
Divide yarn into three groups, keeping in mind how the colors will come out looking, and braid until desired length. Tie another knot to finish off and cut ends so that only about an inch to an inch and a half hang down. **I usually make the braids about 5 1/2 inches long (from knot to knot) for 0-9 months and almost 9 inches long (from knot to knot) for the bigger sizes**

Regular Ties

Starting at the end of each earflap, chain 40 (or as long/short as you wish), SC in 4th chain from hook and the rest of the way down the chain.
After doing both ties, attach Tassels or Pom-Poms.

Tassels

Cut a piece of cardboard 3" square (or use the width of your palm). Wind a strand of yarn around the cardboard approximately 30 times (or however thick you want it) and cut it.
Cut a small length of yarn and insert it under all of the strands at the top of the cardboard; pull up tightly and tie securely. Leave the yarn ends long enough to attach the tassel to the beanie. Cut the yarn at the opposite end of the cardboard and then put the cardboard aside. Cut small length of yarn and, 1 inch below the top, wrap it tightly around the tassel twice; tie securely. Trim the ends and attach to beanie.

Pom-Poms

Cut a piece of cardboard 3" square (or use the width of your palm). Wind a strand of yarn around the cardboard approximately 30 times (or however thick you want it) and cut it. Carefully slide off of your hand or the cardboard, being careful to make sure it keeps the same shape.
Cut about 15" length of yarn and place behind at the middle; wrap around and tie securely, making sure it stays at the middle. Leave the yarn ends long enough to attach the pom-pom to the beanie. Cut the yarn at the opposite both ends of the pom-pom to make the edges. Trim the ends, fluff it up, and attach to the beanie.

For Antennae (make 2)

Chain 16, SC in the second chain from the hook and in the next 4, 2 decreases over the next 4, SC in last 6
Finish off, leaving a long tail for sewing onto the top of beanie.

Diaper Cover Patterns

I now have my edited Diaper Cover Pattern for sale in my Etsy shop. I've had several requests so I finally got it up there. You can buy it here. This is what it looks like:

I have found several free ones online, but I never felt like they looked proportionate or even anything like the shape of underwear. So, I combined several things and added to others to create a diaper cover pattern that I feel looks a lot more perfect.

Also, if you would like to know how I have done any of my diaper covers that have color changes, let me know and I will tell you the specific rows that I do certain color changes on (you will still have to buy the pattern to understand).

Green Lantern Beanies

Trying to get more basic patterns posted while I'm working on typing the more in-depth ones. So, here's another superhero one that I just recently made, the Green Lantern beanie....

Beanies

I used my General Beanie Pattern for this.

Circle

Chain 6, join to form circle, chain 2

Round 1: 2 HDC in each, join, chain 2 (12 HDC)

Round 2: 2 HDC in each, join, chain 2 (24 HDC)

Round 3: (HDC in next, 2 HDC in next) around, join, chain 2 (36 HDC)

Round 4: (HDC in next 2, 2 HDC in next) around, join, chain 2 (48 HDC)

Round 5-End: Continue pattern until at desired size to fit your beanie.

(For example, next round would be: (HDC in next 3, 2 HDC in next) around, join, chain 2)

Emblem

Stitch the Green Lantern emblem onto the circle & then sew onto beanie. There’s a good video here to show you how to stitch it on like this.

Texas A&M Beanies

More collegiate requests led to me making an A&M beanie, which was a little odd since I go for their rivals .... UT. But, I was happy to make it anyway....

Beanies

I used my General Beanie Pattern, adding some letter appliques that I had found online (shown below).

Of course, I made a set too....

Little "A" (originally found here)

Use an H hook

Chain 9

Row 1: Turn, sl st in second chain from hook & each of the next 2, chain 8

Row 2: Turn, sl st in second chain from hook & each of the next 2, chain 6

Row 3: Turn, sl st in second chain from hook & each of the next 4

Row 4: Sl st in each of the next 4 chains on crossbar, sl st in each of the next 5 chains from foundation chain, release hook from last stitch & turn work, insert hook in last stitch & join with sl st to end of Row 2

Finish off, leaving long end to sew onto beanie.

Horizontal Row 1: Turn, SC in second chain from hook and each across (15 SC)

Masked Beanies: Ninja Turtles

Yeah, I know.......more superhero patterns??? But, again, I do have a boy so he's usually my inspiration. These continue my series of Masked Beanie (check out my Masked Beanies: Batman & Captain America post)!

The true Ninja Turtle colors are:
Raphael wears Red
Leonardo wears Blue
Donatello wears Purple
Michelangelo wears Orange

Of course they have to be made with extra rows to account for the masked part. So, because of this, they do look a little too long in the pictures....but they look good when put on!

Start with Green and change to your bandanna color when indicated.

Superman Beanies

Continuing with my Superhero craze, I had made a Superman beanie....

Beanies

I used my General Beanie Pattern for this.

I actually bought the pattern for the logo, so I won't post it on here (but you can buy it here for pretty cheap). You can probably also create one yourself, it wouldn't be hard to duplicate.

Then, you would just need to stitch the "S" on it. There's a great tutorial here.

Of course, I usually make them into sets with my Diaper Cover Pattern.....

Superhero Photography Props

I recently came across an Etsy shop with adorable patterns for newborn photography props, and HAD to buy the superhero bundle that she had for sale (you can buy it too here). It has 6 different photography sets. And, so far, I've made these props...

From the Iron Man pattern, I also created one of my baby sets & a beanie for my son's birthday. I used her mask pattern for the inspiration, but didn't like the double strands look (her patterns are all done double stranded) so I made it into a single stranded version. And, I used her pattern for the power source to put on the bottom. I won't post my edited version, though, because I paid for the original. The beanie was made with my General Beanie Pattern, and you can read about my Diaper Covers.

These photography sets turn out super cute and only take about an hour per piece, so it's very worth it in my opinion. If you do buy them, make sure you are EXTREMELY loose with your crocheting. That's something I had issues with at first and my finished products were turning out tiny, my crocheting is usually very tight.

Minion Beanies

My son and I just recently went to see the new Despicable Me 2 movie, and it motivated me to FINALLY make a pattern I had been wanting to for awhile now...the Minion beanie.....

(You can buy the beanie in my Etsy store here. I make them to order, so it'll take a little over a week to get done.)

And, since the 2nd movie had the evil purple minions, I made one of those too...

As always, I decided to make my baby set but wanted to do them a little different. So, I decided they needed to be made into overalls (Duh...the characters wear overalls after all!)....

Beanies
The beanie was made with my General Beanie Pattern, with a few modifications to add the goggles strap. PATTERNS FOR THE EYES/TEETH/HAIR ARE AT THE VERY BOTTOM!

(I always turn my beanies inside out after completing, to use that side as the “right side”, because I feel it always comes out looking better on that side)

***Note on my beanie patterns: I've realized that I had learned the DC stitch wrong, so my beanie pattern was done to the scale of my wrong stitch instead (which is really a long-DC stitch). So, you might want to do long-DC stitches, OR add a row or two to the bottom of the beanie. Also, my "Chain 2" NEVER counts as a DC in any of my patterns.***

Stitch Abbreviations:

You will need size 4 Worsted weight yarn in Yellow & Black for regular Minion OR Purple & Black for evil Minion (I used I Love this Yarn's Black & Yellow for the regular minion or I Love this Yarn's Periwinkle & Black for the evil minion). I usually use the size H hook on everything, but I also work my stitches pretty tightly. (Just remember that changes hook changes the size of your work)

Make sure you start with the main color (yellow for regular, purple for evil) and switch to black where indicated.

Do NOT Finish off, start your Edging/Border here using the same yarn first

Edging/Border

It's best when you have added earflaps to do a border in that same color of the earflaps first, and then another border in the contrasting color. This will give you a better looking edge, taking care of any weird gaps caused by different size stitches. So, chain 1 (after last stitch from earflap) & then SC around entire beanie in that same color, join to first SC. Then change to the contrasting color (Ishowed below how I do that) & SC around entire beanie again (make sure that if you are doing Regular Ties, that you do them at the points of the earflaps starting immediately after changing colors for second border)

Changing colors: End your last row by starting an SC into last stitch, but do not pull through loops on hook. So with the color your ending: yarn over, insert hook into last stitch, pull up a loop. Then get your second color: yarn over, pull through both loops on hook, slip stitch to first SC of round. Color change complete! Now, Chain 1 with this new color and continue with your border.

Ties

Braided Ties

Cut yarn out of desired colors (1-3 colors) in 36" strands (9 total). Fold in half and grab at the loop that forms at the halfway point. Pull that loop through the ch-4 space from last row on Earflap. Open loop up and pull through the strands left (this makes a sort of knot to keep the braid on there and will double your strands, leaving you with 18).
Divide yarn into three groups, keeping in mind how the colors will come out looking, and braid until desired length. Tie another knot to finish off and cut ends so that only about an inch to an inch and a half hang down. **I usually make the braids about 5 1/2 inches long (from knot to knot) for 0-9 months and almost 9 inches long (from knot to knot) for the bigger sizes**

Regular Ties

Starting at the end of each earflap, chain 40 (or as long/short as you wish), SC in 4th chain from hook and the rest of the way down the chain.
After doing both ties, attach Tassels or Pom-Poms.

Tassels

Cut a piece of cardboard 3" square (or use the width of your palm). Wind a strand of yarn around the cardboard approximately 30 times (or however thick you want it) and cut it.
Cut a small length of yarn and insert it under all of the strands at the top of the cardboard; pull up tightly and tie securely. Leave the yarn ends long enough to attach the tassel to the beanie. Cut the yarn at the opposite end of the cardboard and then put the cardboard aside. Cut small length of yarn and, 1 inch below the top, wrap it tightly around the tassel twice; tie securely. Trim the ends and attach to beanie.

Pom-Poms

Cut a piece of cardboard 3" square (or use the width of your palm). Wind a strand of yarn around the cardboard approximately 30 times (or however thick you want it) and cut it. Carefully slide off of your hand or the cardboard, being careful to make sure it keeps the same shape.
Cut about 15" length of yarn and place behind at the middle; wrap around and tie securely, making sure it stays at the middle. Leave the yarn ends long enough to attach the pom-pom to the beanie. Cut the yarn at the opposite both ends of the pom-pom to make the edges. Trim the ends, fluff it up, and attach to the beanie.

Face Embellishments

(originally found small & large eyes here, edited them to look better and to include pupils)

Use the size eyes and amount of eyes that will look good on your beanie size! I used the directions to add the iris color of the minions.... but, as you'll notice in my pictures, for those earlier versions I did do not have the irises. Do them however you want! If you want irises, use brown for the regular minion and dark purple for the evil minion. If you don't want irises, continue all the Brown/Dark Purple rounds in black.

Small Eye (originally found here, edited some)

Using size H hook, appx. 2 1/2" in diameter. (Use smaller hook, if trying to fit 2 eyes on beanie) I use this pattern when trying to fit 2 eyes on beanies smaller than the Toddler size.

Round 1 (in Black): Chain 2, 6 SC in second chain from hook, join to form circle (6 SC)

Round 2 (in Brown/Dark Purple): Chain 1, 2 SC in each around, join. (12 SC)

Round 3 (in White): Chain 1, (SC in first, 2 SC in next) repeat around, join (18 SC)

Round 4 (in Grey): Chain 1, SC in each around, join (18 SC)

Round 5 (in Grey): Chain 1, SC in FRONT LOOPS ONLY of each around

Row 3: Skip first stitch, SC decrease across next 2, SC in next 4, turn (5 ST)

Row 4: SC decrease across first 2, SC decrease across last 2 (2 ST)

Finish off, leaving a long tail for sewing onto eye.

Teeth (my original design)

Use size H hook

Square Tooth - Chain 3, SC in second chain from hook & in next, Chain 1, turn, SC in both stitches across, finish off with long tail for sewing onto beanie.
Sharp Pointed Tooth - Chain 3, SC in second chain from hook & in next, Chain 1, turn, SC in both stitches across, Chain 2, turn, slip st in second chain from hook & in first SC on row, finish off with long tail for sewing onto beanie.
Triangular Tooth - Chain 4, SC in second chain from hook & in next 2, Chain 1, turn, SC decrease across first 2 stitches, SC in last, turn, SC decrease across both stitches, finish off with long tail for sewing onto beanie.

Mouth (my original design)

The mouth can be done two ways.... either chain the length needed and stitch it down onto the beanie OR the method I used was forming the mouth straight on the beanie using the stitching method seen in this video.

Straight Hair (my original design)

I cut lengths of black yarn that were appropriate for the beanie size, then ran each through a stitch somewhere and tied knots on both sides of each of these strands to keep them in place.

Frizzy Hair (my original design)

I cut lengths of yarn (double the size of the ones for the straight hair), found the center of that piece by folding it, stuck my hook in a stitch and pulled that middle part through (making a loop on one side and the two end sticking out on the other side). Then you need to spread the loop open with your fingers, grab the two ends and pull them though that loop. Pull tight so that it holds firm onto the stitch and doesn't unravel. Now, get a tapestry needle and pick at those two ends of yarn to pull all the strings apart on both strands of yarn (this causes it to become fuzzy and crimped). Do this several times until you have enough "hair" to cover the whole top of the beanie!
