I just went through and fixed some issues in my already published posts! Some of my basic patterns were rewritten in a way that will make the finished products look better.... So, in turn, I went through and changed those details on basically EVERY post since I write all my patterns based off the same basic one. I also put in new pictures with BETTER picture quality/coloring, so I hope that helps in showing you the true looks of these finished products!
Also, I have a BUNCH of patterns that I'm going to post soon (I have just as many drafts as I do published posts at this point). I'm making a lot for my son's birthday and for Christmas gifts. I haven't been posting a lot because of this...busy making stuff instead of blogging, but I'll get them up here soon!

Log Cabin Lapghan
I'm trying to get all my more recent projects up here. I'm getting it done, just slowly. Here is one that I worked on for about 3 weeks...a "lapghan". My great aunt's 90th birthday was just recently and I remembered being told how cold she gets when she runs her air conditioner because it blows directly onto where she normally sits. She's also been a big quilter most of her life, so when I saw this normally quilting pattern of a Log Cabin design on an afghan.... I knew it was EXACTLY what I was looking for...

I used a size H hook & size 4 worsted yarn. You must get 7 different colors of yarn, the best use of the pattern is to get the yarns in gradients from the same base colors. The best way to keep them organized is to figure out the placement of your colors in your pattern and label the yarns with sticky notes, putting on it the letter that coordinates to that color in the pattern (as shown below)
Special Stitches used:
long-DC (this is actually how I do my DC's normally on my beanies): yo and draw up a loop in next SC, yo and draw through 1 loop on hook, yo and draw through 2 loops, yo and draw through last 2 loops on hook
long-HDC (it's really just a drop stitch): yo, insert hook into SC directly below the Chain-1 from previous row and draw up a loop to the height of row you are currently working on, yo and draw through all 3 loops on hook
As always, I edit the patterns to make them turn out better or to explain things better (pictures above each section to show what you should have when done with that particular section)....
Use color A in this section. I made 17 (16 for my 4 square by 4 square lapghan and 1 for a matching cushion that I'll be finishing later on)
Chain 2
Round 1: 8 SC in second chain from hook, join to form a circle, turn
Round 2: Chain 1, SC in next, (long-DC, SC, long-DC) all in next, SC in next, (long-DC, SC, long-DC) all in next, SC in next, (long-DC, SC, long-DC) all in next, SC in next, (long-DC, SC, long-DC) all in last, join, turn
Round 3: Chain 1, SC in first, 3 HDC in next, (SC in next 3, 3 HDC in next) 3 times, SC in next 2, join
Finish off.
Use Color B in this section, starting at center HDC of ANY corner. In each new section, I added this new color to EVERY block before moving onto the next section. This just felt like it flowed better for me. Make sure you start each section with the right side facing you (the side that has the bobble-type of effect showing from your first section).
Row 1: SC in joining and in next 5 stitches, 3 SC in next (the corner), SC in next 6, turn
Rows 2-5: Chain 1, SC in each across (doing 3 SC in center SC of the corner), turn
Finish off.
Use Color C in this section, starting at the end of the last row that you had finish at from Section 2.
Row 1: SC in joining stitch and in end of next 4 rows, 5 SC, 3 SC in next (the corner), 5 SC, SC in ends of next 5 rows, turn
Rows 2-5: Chain 1, SC in each across (doing 3 SC in center SC of the corner), turn
Finish off.
Use Color D for this section, starting at the end of the last row that you had finish at from Section 3.
Row 1: SC in joining stitch and in end of next 4 rows, 11 SC, 3 SC in next (the corner), 11 SC, SC in ends of next 5 rows, turn

Finishing
There are so many ways to do this, but I started first by joining 16 of my blocks together with an invisible stitch to make the center of my lapghan (shown above). And then I created my border like this:
Rows 1-3 (in Color G) : SC around entire work (doing 3 SC in center of each corner), join, Chain 1
Row 4-5 (in Color D) : SC around entire work (doing 3 SC in center of each corner), join, Chain 1Row 6 (continuing in Color D): SC in first, (Chain 1, skip 1, SC in next) around entire work .... doing 3 SC in the center stitch of the corners, join, Chain 1
Row 7 (continuing in Color D): SC in first, (long-HDC in next, SC in next) around entire work .... doing 3 SC in the center stitch of the corners, join, Chain 1
Row 8 (continuing in Color D): SC around entire work (doing 3 SC in center of each corner), join, Chain 1
Rows 9-11 (in Color G) : SC around entire work (doing 3 SC in center of each corner), join, Chain 1

Superhero Afghan: Superman (Block 2)
(UPDATE 11/2015: I am no longer working on this project because I was not happy with the method of using SC. I do not plan on starting it back up either. There are multiple grids like this if you click the link given in the first paragraph, all I was doing was transcribing it down into a written pattern. There are no downloadable versions of this patterns.)
I recently discovered a page with superhero logos already made into grids. I'm guessing it was originally for cross stitch, but I saw an opportunity to make it into an afghan for my son using entirely sc stitches. This is my second block: Superman!
Here is what the grid looked like (it's 50 x 50):
Since you change colors so much, you end up with a ton of end to weave in, if you want to be able to see the same pattern on both sides. If you don't care whether it's reversible, then I would suggest trying to carry over all strings on one side and then lining that side with a backing fabric (like fleece) to cover it up.
Since mine was a personal project, I didn't mind having to take extra time to weave every end in; I wanted it to be perfect no matter how long that took. It's just something you'll have to have tons of patience for. I would do about 10 rows and then weave in the ends of the first 5 rows, and stop every 5 rows after that to weave in the previous 5 rows. I did it that way so that my most recently worked rows would stay tight and not unravel.
This is what it looks like with even just a few rows of ends not weaved in, to give you an idea of what it would be like:

And, this is my finished block, which is about 12" x 12" and is close to 2,760 stitches with tons of ends to weave in:
The outline part (the Grey) is hard to shape because of them mostly being single crochet stitches, but I used the ends that I had to weave in to try to shape it better (this takes quite some time, but is worth it). If you don't want to deal with the outline, I would suggest replacing it with the Yellow & the Red in the proper places.
I made a general pattern, so that I wouldn't have to keep up with the blocks on the picture. I will post below, but I do ask that if you use in any way you give me credit where it is due. I spent quite a bit of time mapping this out. Thank you!

Superhero Afghan: Batman (Block 1)
(UPDATE 11/2015: I am no longer working on this project because I was not happy with the method of using SC. I do not plan on starting it back up either. There are multiple grids like this if you click the link given in the first paragraph, all I was doing was transcribing it down into a written pattern. There are no downloadable versions of this patterns.)
I recently discovered a page with superhero logos already made into grids. I'm guessing it was really for cross stitch, but I saw an opportunity to make it into a afghan for my son using entirely sc stitches. The first one I decided to start on was my favorite: Batman!
Here is what the grid looked like (it's 50 x 50):
Since you change colors so much, you end up with a ton of end to weave in, if you want to be able to see the same pattern on both sides. If you don't care whether it's reversible, then I would suggest trying to carry over all strings on one side and then lining that side with a backing fabric (like fleece) to cover it up.
Since mine was a personal project, I didn't mind having to take extra time to weave every end in; I wanted it to be perfect no matter how long that took. It's just something you'll have to have tons of patience for. I would do about 10 rows and then weave in the ends of the first 5 rows, and stop every 5 rows after that to weave in the previous 5 rows. I did it that way so that my most recently worked rows would stay tight and not unravel.
This is what it looks like with even just a few rows of ends not weaved in, to give you an idea of what it would be like:

And, this is my finished block, which is about 12" x 12" and is close to 2,760 stitches with tons of ends to weave in:
The outer circular part is hard to shape because of them all being single crochet stitches, but I used the ends that I had to weave in to shape it better (this takes quite some time, but is worth it)
I made a general pattern, so that I wouldn't have to keep up with the blocks on the picture. I will post below, but I do ask that if you use in any way you give me credit where it is due. I spent quite a bit of time mapping this out. Thank you!
