Masked Beanies: Batman (Version 2) & Captain America

More superhero patterns! These are BEANIES & MASKS all in one! So, because of this, they do look a little too long in the pictures....but they look good when put on! These are a continuance of the birthday presents for my son. He loves to dress up & "play superhero", so I'm making quite a few dress up superhero items for him to play in.

Here are the ones made for him....

As I'm doing so, I'm also making superhero baby sets to sell....

I started off with my General Beanie Pattern, but added the row for the eyeholes after that.

(I always turn my beanies inside out after completing, to use that side as the “right side”, because I feel it always comes out looking better on that side)

***Note on my beanie patterns: I've realized that I had learned the DC stitch wrong, so my beanie pattern was done to the scale of my wrong stitch instead (which is really a long-DC stitch). So, you might want to do long-DC stitches, OR add a row or two to the bottom of the beanie (in this case: before the row with the Chain stitches that make the eyeholes). Also, my "Chain 2" NEVER counts as a DC in any of my patterns.***

You will need size 4 Worsted weight yarn in Black for Batman OR Blue for Captain America (I used I Love This Yarn in Black & Royal Blue). I usually use the size H hook on everything, but I also work my stitches pretty tightly. (Just remember that changes hook changes the size of your work)

I used a size H hook and size 4 worsted yarn in black. Add/remove rows or use a different hook size for bigger/smaller ears. Make sure you make two.

I used a size G hook for my Preschool size beanie (use a size F hook for sizes smaller than 9 months) and size 4 worsted yarn in white .

I used a size K hook for my 3-6 month size beanie and size 4 worsted yarn in white. Again, play with hook sizes to make bigger/smaller.

Row 1: Slip st in second chain from hook, slip st in each of the next 2 chains
Row 2: Chain 8
Row 3: Slip st in second chain from hook, slip st in each of the next 2 chains, chain 6
Row 4: Slip st in second chain from hook, slip st in each of the next 4 chains
Row 5: Slip st in each of the next 4 chains from Row 2, slip st in each of the next 5 chains from foundation chains, release hook from last stitch, turn work so you have the wrong side facing, insert hook in last stitch, join with slip st to first stitch of foundation chains.

Captain America Wing Applique (found original pattern here)
I used size H hook for my 3-6 month size beanie (My suggestion is to use H hook for 0-12 months, I hook for Toddler-Preschool, & J hook for Child-Adult.) and size 4 worsted yarn in white. Make sure you make two. I edited the original pattern a bit, into this....

Superhero Photography Props

I recently came across an Etsy shop with adorable patterns for newborn photography props, and HAD to buy the superhero bundle that she had for sale (you can buy it too here). It has 6 different photography sets. And, so far, I've made these props...

From the Iron Man pattern, I also created one of my baby sets & a beanie for my son's birthday. I used her mask pattern for the inspiration, but didn't like the double strands look (her patterns are all done double stranded) so I made it into a single stranded version. And, I used her pattern for the power source to put on the bottom. I won't post my edited version, though, because I paid for the original. The beanie was made with my General Beanie Pattern, and you can read about my Diaper Covers.

These photography sets turn out super cute and only take about an hour per piece, so it's very worth it in my opinion. If you do buy them, make sure you are EXTREMELY loose with your crocheting. That's something I had issues with at first and my finished products were turning out tiny, my crocheting is usually very tight.

Superhero Afghan: Batman (Block 1)

(UPDATE 11/2015: I am no longer working on this project because I was not happy with the method of using SC. I do not plan on starting it back up either. There are multiple grids like this if you click the link given in the first paragraph, all I was doing was transcribing it down into a written pattern. There are no downloadable versions of this patterns.)

I recently discovered a page with superhero logos already made into grids. I'm guessing it was really for cross stitch, but I saw an opportunity to make it into a afghan for my son using entirely sc stitches. The first one I decided to start on was my favorite: Batman!

Here is what the grid looked like (it's 50 x 50):

Since you change colors so much, you end up with a ton of end to weave in, if you want to be able to see the same pattern on both sides. If you don't care whether it's reversible, then I would suggest trying to carry over all strings on one side and then lining that side with a backing fabric (like fleece) to cover it up.

Since mine was a personal project, I didn't mind having to take extra time to weave every end in; I wanted it to be perfect no matter how long that took. It's just something you'll have to have tons of patience for. I would do about 10 rows and then weave in the ends of the first 5 rows, and stop every 5 rows after that to weave in the previous 5 rows. I did it that way so that my most recently worked rows would stay tight and not unravel.

This is what it looks like with even just a few rows of ends not weaved in, to give you an idea of what it would be like:

And, this is my finished block, which is about  12" x  12" and is close to 2,760 stitches with tons of ends to weave in:

The outer circular part is hard to shape because of them all being single crochet stitches, but I used the ends that I had to weave in to shape it better (this takes quite some time, but is worth it)


I made a general pattern, so that I wouldn't have to keep up with the blocks on the picture. I will post below, but I do ask that if you use in any way you give me credit where it is due. I spent quite a bit of time mapping this out. Thank you!

Row 42: 20 sc in black, 9 sc in yellow, 21 sc in black, chain 1, turn
Rows 43-49: 50 sc in black, chain 1, turn
Row 50: 50 sc in black, finish off & weave in all ends

Batman Logo Beanies

I love superhero things (of course, I have a boy!), so I've been wanting to do a Batman beanie and possibly a set. But, I couldn't figure out how I would do the bat. Then, I found a really great bat pattern online at Louie's Loops, he even had an oval pattern. So, I started making a beanie with my General Beanie Pattern (also placing a yellow border of sc stiches), then proceeded to make the bat and oval. I loved the way it turned out!

Stitch Abbreviations:

CH = Chain

SC = Single Crochet

DC = Double Crochet

SL ST = Slip Stitch

ST = Stitch(es)

MP = Mini Picot (Chain 2, SL ST in 2^nd chain from hook)

You will need size 4 Worsted weight yarn in Black & Yellow (I used I love This Yarn). I used the size H on mine to make it bigger. (Just remember that changes hook changes the size of your work)

Batman Bat (originally found here)
Chain 16
Row 1: Skip first 2 chains, HDC 1, MP, HDC 1 in next two, SC 1, MP, SC 1 in next three, MP, SC 1 in next three, MP, SC 1, HDC 1 in next two, MP, HDC 1, sl.st 1 in same as last. Turn upside down and chain 2 (15)
Row 2: On backside: (In where you put the last HDC and sl.st) DC 1, HDC 1 in next two, SC 1 in next three, MP, SC 1 in next two, MP, SC 1 in next three, HDC 1 in next two, DC 1 (14)
Cut and sew the end into the bat to hide it.

Round 1: SC 6 in second chain from hook, don’t turn. (6)
Round 2: SC 3 in first st, 2 in next, 1 in next, repeat once. (12)
Round 3: SC 1 in first st, 2 in next three, 1 in next 3, 2 in next three, 1 in last two sts. (18)
Round 4: SC 1 in first two sts, 2 in next (inc), 1, 2, 1, 2, 1 in next four, 2 in next, 1, 2, 1, 2, 1 in last two sts. (24)
Round 5: SC 1 in first three sts, 2 in next, 1, 2, 1, 2, 1 in next seven, 2 in next, 1, 2, 1, 2, 1 in last four sts. (30)

Then I decided to make a set, but wanted to do the beanie a little different (adding braids and earflaps):

Bat Ears (my original design)

I used a size H hook and size 4 worsted yarn in black. Add/remove rows or use a different hook size for bigger/smaller ears. Make sure you make two.

Chain 3

Round 1: 4 DC in third chain from hook, join, chain 2 (4 DC)

Round 2: 2 DC in each around, join, chain 2 (8 DC)

Round 3: (DC in first, 2 DC in next) repeat around, join, chain 2 (12 DC)

Round 4: (DC in first 2, 2 DC in next) repeat around, join, chain 2 (16 DC)

Round 5: (DC in first 3, 2 DC in next) repeat around, join (20 DC)

Finish off, leaving a long tail for sewing onto beanie.
