Superhero Afghan: Batman (Block 1)

(UPDATE 11/2015: I am no longer working on this project because I was not happy with the method of using SC. I do not plan on starting it back up either. There are multiple grids like this if you click the link given in the first paragraph, all I was doing was transcribing it down into a written pattern. There are no downloadable versions of this patterns.)

I recently discovered a page with superhero logos already made into grids. I'm guessing it was really for cross stitch, but I saw an opportunity to make it into a afghan for my son using entirely sc stitches. The first one I decided to start on was my favorite: Batman!

Here is what the grid looked like (it's 50 x 50):
Since you change colors so much, you end up with a ton of end to weave in, if you want to be able to see the same pattern on both sides. If you don't care whether it's reversible, then I would suggest trying to carry over all strings on one side and then lining that side with a backing fabric (like fleece) to cover it up.

Since mine was a personal project, I didn't mind having to take extra time to weave every end in; I wanted it to be perfect no matter how long that took. It's just something you'll have to have tons of patience for. I would do about 10 rows and then weave in the ends of the first 5 rows, and stop every 5 rows after that to weave in the previous 5 rows. I did it that way so that my most recently worked rows would stay tight and not unravel.

This is what it looks like with even just a few rows of ends not weaved in, to give you an idea of what it would be like:

(One side:)
(the Other side:)

And, this is my finished block, which is about  12" x  12" and is close to 2,760 stitches with tons of ends to weave in:
The outer circular part is hard to shape because of them all being single crochet stitches, but I used the ends that I had to weave in to shape it better (this takes quite some time, but is worth it)

I made a general pattern, so that I wouldn't have to keep up with the blocks on the picture. I will post below, but I do ask that if you use in any way you give me credit where it is due. I spent quite a bit of time mapping this out. Thank you!

  3. I spent hours trying to make this, but I just couldn't get it right. Somehow, I was adding stitches, so my pattern was off. I pulled it out and counted stitches over and over but just couldn't get it right. I was sad because I was so looking forward to giving this as a gift.

    1. I'm sorry it didn't turn out right for you. I've done it twice now (one in SC & one in Tunisian) and haven't had any issues. Just make sure you chain 51 in the beginning and starting your first SC in the 2nd chain from hook. Also, it could be the way your changing colors. The way I do it is: insert hook into stitch, yarn over and pull up loop of the color you are WORKING ON (this makes the last SC of that color), then yarn over with the color you are CHANGING TO and pull through both loops on hook. Then start your fist SC of that new color in the next stitch. Hope that helps you! If not..you might want to try Tunisian, just reverse the order on the even numbered rows to do Tunisian.

    1. Sorry, I'm still in the process. I have hit a few hitches and am finally on track now. I'm going to make a post explaining this and edit these two posts that I have done to explain it sometime soon.

  6. To make this in to a twin size did you have to make multiple blocks? If so how many did it take? Also how did you weave in the rows so it looks the same on both sides? I didn't completely understand that.

    1. Yes, I am still in the process of making them, but you will have to make one of each block or multiples of certain blocks (whatever type of design you want for your afghan). Each block turns out about 12 inches by 12 inches when using the SC version, and about 12 inches by 15 inches when using the Tunisian/Afghan version. I have actually added blocks to my list to make (which I'll add to my list on here soon). It will take around 15-20 blocks for a Twin size. As far as weaving in the rows, I gave up on that and decided to switch to doing Tunisian stitch because it was taking WAY too long....the Tunisian version will have yarn carried over so it won't looked great on the backside.

  7. Hey, I really like this idea and am planning on making something similar for my nephew. While researching, I found out about a technique called tapestry crochet. It might help you make it so you dont have all those ends. This blog explains it really well http://happyhooker.wordpress.com/2013/01/24/how-to-follow-a-chart-for-tapestry-crochet/
I thought it might help you out

    1. You're probably referring to the Tunisian/Afghan Stitch, which I have been testing and trying to perfect. The reason they are taking so long to put up is because I'm trying to get each chart written out in both the SC version (which I had only wanted to do so that I could have the backside look finished too) and in the Tunisian version. It is taking awhile because I couldn't get the Tunisian to look right, then I realized that you have to flip the chart and work the chart side to side instead of bottom to top. So, that is what I've been working on trying to get out, it's just taking awhile because I've had quite a few things com up in our family.

Thanks for the thought! And, I do recommend the Tunisian for the charts instead of the SC version because it's so much easier! Just flip the chart where the right side of the chart becomes the bottom instead, otherwise it will distort your logo and it will look vertical instead of horizontal.

  8. Is this an Afghan or is it just a square?

    1. This was just a block, it came out about 12 inches by 12 inches in SC stitches and about 15 inches by 12 inches in Tunisian stitches. I'm sure you could turn it into an Afghan with a bigger hook size and more rows of black background, though.
