University of Texas Longhorns Beanies and Boots

I'm trying to get more into making stuff themed for sports teams, so I started with what I like best.... the UT Longhorns!

(Look at my post Diaper Cover Patterns for more about my diaper covers)

(Every pattern that I currently have available to download is in Word format and is downloadable on my Scribd. If I do not have a pattern there, then I do not have a downloadable version of it. Please do not e-mail me with requests of patterns, as I most likely will not even check my e-mail. I apologize for this but I have a full-time job now and no longer keep up with the pattern requests. Thanks, and here is the link to my Scribd: https://www.scribd.com/ashley_holden_14)

Beanie

The beanie was made with my General Beanie Pattern, I used I Love This Yarn's Burnt Pumpkin for the main color with a white as a border. (Adding the Longhorn Applique shown below)

Booties

I used the pattern from my previous post Cowboy Boots, just inserting the yarn that I used for this set and putting on a star applique (posted below).

Longhorn Applique (originally found it here, edited to make more sense)
I used size G hook for the one on the beanie and size H hook for the one on the diaper cover.

Chain 4, join to form ring
Round 1: Chain 1, SC in ring 8 times, join
Row 2: Chain 1, SC in first 3, Chain 1, turn
Row 3: Chain 1, SC across row, Chain 1, turn
Row 4: 2 SC in first, SC in next, 2 SC in last, Chain 1, turn
Row 5: 2 SC in first, SC in next 3, 2 SC in last, turn
Row 6: Chain 3, slip st in second Chain from hook, Chain 2, skip next Chain, SC in each SC across, turn
Row 7: Chain 3, slip st in second Chain from hook, Chain 2, skip next Chain, SC in next 7, turn
Row 8: Chain 11, slip st in second Chain from hook and in next 9, slip st into next SC, SC 5, slip st in next, turn
Row 9: Chain 11, slip st in second Chain from hook and in next 9, slip st into next SC, SC 3, slip st into next
Finish off leaving a long tail to sew onto beanie

Star Applique (originally found it here)
I used a size D hook.

Chain 2
Round 1: 5 SC in second chain from hook; join with slip st to form circle (5 SC)
Round 2: (Chain 3, slip st in second chain from hook, SC in next chain, slip st in next SC one the previous round) repeat around, making 5 points
Finish off, leaving long tail for sewing onto booties.

******Credit is given where due, I don't claim any patterns to be mine that are not. If you use this pattern please link back to Butterfly’s Creations, please do not claim patterns as your own that are not yours. I also ask that you do not repost my pattern, it takes quite a bit of time to count everything out and type these up so please give credit where it's due. *****

Revamp/ Corrections of the Blog

I just went through and fixed some issues in my already published posts! Some of my basic patterns were rewritten in a way that will make the finished products look better.... So, in turn, I went through and changed those details on basically EVERY post since I write all my patterns based off the same basic one. I also put in new pictures with BETTER picture quality/coloring, so I hope that helps in showing you the true looks of these finished products!

Also, I have a BUNCH of patterns that I'm going to post soon (I have just as many drafts as I do published posts at this point). I'm making a lot for my son's birthday and for Christmas gifts. I haven't been posting a lot because of this...busy making stuff instead of blogging, but I'll get them up here soon!

Things to come:
A lot of Superhero designs (I only have a son)!
Movie character designs!
Some sewn designs, instead of just crocheting!

Log Cabin Lapghan

I'm trying to get all my more recent projects up here. I'm getting it done, just slowly. Here is one that I worked on for about 3 weeks...a "lapghan". My great aunt's 90th birthday was just recently and I remembered being told how cold she gets when she runs her air conditioner because it blows directly onto where she normally sits. She's also been a big quilter most of her life, so when I saw this normally quilting pattern of a Log Cabin design on an afghan.... I knew it was EXACTLY what I was looking for...

Autumn Log Cabin Lapghan
(full-size pattern found here)

I used a size H hook & size 4 worsted yarn. You must get 7 different colors of yarn, the best use of the pattern is to get the yarns in gradients from the same base colors. The best way to keep them organized is to figure out the placement of your colors in your pattern and label the yarns with sticky notes, putting on it the letter that coordinates to that color in the pattern (as shown below)

Special Stitches used:
long-DC (this is actually how I do my DC's normally on my beanies): yo and draw up a loop in next SC, yo and draw through 1 loop on hook, yo and draw through 2 loops, yo and draw through last 2 loops on hook
long-HDC (it's really just a drop stitch): yo, insert hook into SC directly below the Chain-1 from previous row and draw up a loop to the height of row you are currently working on, yo and draw through all 3 loops on hook

As always, I edit the patterns to make them turn out better or to explain things better (pictures above each section to show what you should have when done with that particular section)....

Section 1
Use color A in this section. I made 17 (16 for my 4 square by 4 square lapghan and 1 for a matching cushion that I'll be finishing later on)

Chain 2
Round 1: 8 SC in second chain from hook, join to form a circle, turn
Round 2: Chain 1, SC in next, (long-DC, SC, long-DC) all in next, SC in next, (long-DC, SC, long-DC) all in next, SC in next, (long-DC, SC, long-DC) all in next, SC in next, (long-DC, SC, long-DC) all in last, join, turn
Round 3: Chain 1, SC in first, 3 HDC in next, (SC in next 3, 3 HDC in next) 3 times, SC in next 2, join
Finish off.

Section 2
Use Color B in this section, starting at center HDC of ANY corner. In each new section, I added this new color to EVERY block before moving onto the next section. This just felt like it flowed better for me. Make sure you start each section with the right side facing you (the side that has the bobble-type of effect showing from your first section).

Row 1: SC in joining and in next 5 stitches, 3 SC in next (the corner), SC in next 6, turn
Rows 2-5: Chain 1, SC in each across (doing 3 SC in center SC of the corner), turn
Finish off.

Section 3
Use Color C in this section, starting at the end of the last row that you had finish at from Section 2.

Row 1: SC in joining stitch and in end of next 4 rows, 5 SC, 3 SC in next (the corner), 5 SC, SC in ends of next 5 rows, turn
Rows 2-5: Chain 1, SC in each across (doing 3 SC in center SC of the corner), turn
Finish off.

Section 4
Use Color D for this section, starting at the end of the last row that you had finish at from Section 3.

Row 1: SC in joining stitch and in end of next 4 rows, 11 SC, 3 SC in next (the corner), 11 SC, SC in ends of next 5 rows, turn
Row 2: Chain 1, SC in first, (long-DC in next, SC in next) 8 times, (long-DC, SC, long-DC) all in corner SC, SC in next, (long-DC in next, SC in next) 8 times, turn
Row 3: Chain 1, SC in each across (doing 3 SC in center SC of the corner), turn
Row 4:  Chain 1, SC in first, (long-DC in next, SC in next) 8 times, (long-DC, SC, long-DC) all in corner SC, SC in next, (long-DC in next, SC in next) 8 times, turn
Row 5:  Chain 1, SC in each across (doing 3 SC in center SC of the corner), turn
Finish off.

Section 5
Use Color E for this section, starting at the end of the last row that you had finish at from Section 4.

Row 1: SC in joining stitch and in ends of next 4 rows, 15 SC, 3 SC in next (the corner), 15 SC, SC in ends of the next 5 rows, turn
Row 2: Chain 1, SC in first, (long-DC in next, SC in next) 10 times, (long-DC, SC, long-DC) all in corner SC, SC in next, (long-DC in next, SC in next) 10 times, turn
Row 3: Chain 1, SC in each across (doing 3 SC in center SC of the corner), turn
Row 4:  Chain 1, SC in first, (long-DC in next, SC in next) 11 times, (long-DC, SC, long-DC) all in corner SC, SC in next, (long-DC in next, SC in next) 11 times, turn
Row 5: Chain 1, SC in each across (doing 3 SC in center SC of the corner), turn
Finish off.

Section 6
Use Color F for this section, starting at the end of the last row that you had finish at from Section 5.

Row 1: SC in joining stitch and in ends of next 4 rows, 21 SC, 3 SC in next (the corner), 21 SC, SC in ends of next 5 rows, turn
Row 2: Chain 1, SC in each across (doing 3 SC in center SC of the corner), turn
Row 3: Chain 1, SC in first, (Chain 1, skip 1, SC in next) 13 times, Chain 1, skip 1, 3 SC in next (the corner), (Chain 1, skip 1, SC in next) 14 times, turn
Row 4: Chain 1, SC in first, (long-HDC in next, SC in next) 14 times, turn
Row 5: Chain 1, SC in each across (doing 3 SC in center SC of the corner), turn
Finish off.

Section 7
Use Color G for this section, starting at the end of the last row that you had finish at from Section 6.

Row 1: SC in joining stitch and in ends of next 4 rows, 25 SC, 3 SC in next (the corner), 25 SC, SC in ends of next 5 rows, turn
Row 2: Chain 1, SC in each across (doing 3 SC in center SC of the corner), turn
Row 3: Chain 1, SC in first, (Chain 1, skip 1, SC in next) 15 times, Chain 1, Skip 1, 3 SC in next (the corner), (Chain 1, skip 1, SC in next) 16 times, turn
Row 4: Chain 1, SC in first, (long-HDC in next, SC in next) 16 times, 3 SC in next (the corner), SC in next, (long-HDC in next, SC in next) 16 times, turn
Row 5: Chain 1, SC in each across (doing 3 SC in center SC of the corner), turn
Finish off.

Finishing
There are so many ways to do this, but I started first by joining 16 of my blocks together with an invisible stitch to make the center of my lapghan (shown above). And then I created my border like this:

Rows 1-3 (in Color G) : SC around entire work (doing 3 SC in center of each corner), join, Chain 1
Row 4-5 (in Color D) : SC around entire work (doing 3 SC in center of each corner), join, Chain 1
Row 6 (continuing in Color D): SC in first, (Chain 1, skip 1, SC in next) around entire work .... doing 3 SC in the center stitch of the corners, join, Chain 1
Row 7 (continuing in Color D): SC in first, (long-HDC in next, SC in next) around entire work .... doing 3 SC in the center stitch of the corners, join, Chain 1
Row 8 (continuing in Color D): SC around entire work (doing 3 SC in center of each corner), join, Chain 1
Rows 9-11 (in Color G) : SC around entire work (doing 3 SC in center of each corner), join, Chain 1

(And, of course, my finished work is pictured at the very top of this page)

Frankenstein Beanies

Halloween is coming sorta soon (which happens to be my favorite holiday) so, lately, I've been trying to come up with ideas for the holiday. Well, I found a beanie pattern for this iconic Halloween character, Frankenstein....

(Look at my post Diaper Cover Patterns for more about my diaper covers)

Beanies
(originally found pattern here, edited & created more sizes)

(I always turn my beanies inside out after completing, to use that side as the “right side”, because I feel it always comes out looking better on that side)

***Note on my beanie patterns: I've realized that I had learned the DC stitch wrong, so my beanie pattern was done to the scale of my wrong stitch instead (which is really a long-DC stitch). So, you might want to do long-DC stitches, OR add a row or two to the bottom of the beanie. Also, my "Chain 2" NEVER counts as a DC in any of my patterns.***

Round 11 (in Green)(DC in first 15, 2 DC in next) repeat around, join, chain 2 (each time you come to a "CH 1" space, work as drop stitches in the skipped stitch from the previous round) (68 DC)
Round 12-16 (in Green): DC in each around, join, chain 2 (68 DC)
Finish off. (Start on Earflap 1, if doing Earflaps/Ties. If doing a border in a contrasting color, start at Edging/Border section here. OR, if you want it one solid color, just weave in ends)

Do NOT Finish off, start your Edging/Border here using the same yarn first

Edging/Border

  • It's best when you have added earflaps to do a border in that same color of the earflaps first, and then another border in the contrasting color. This will give you a better looking edge, taking care of any weird gaps caused by different size stitches. So, chain 1 (after last stitch from earflap) & then SC around entire beanie in that same color, join to first SC. Then change to the contrasting color (Ishowed below how I do that) & SC around entire beanie again (make sure that if you are doing Regular Ties, that you do them at the points of the earflaps starting immediately after changing colors for second border)

  • Changing colors: End your last row by starting an SC into last stitch, but do not pull through loops on hook. So with the color your ending: yarn over, insert hook into last stitch, pull up a loop. Then get your second color: yarn over, pull through both loops on hook, slip stitch to first SC of round. Color change complete! Now, Chain 1 with this new color and continue with your border.

***I TURN MY BEANIES INSIDE OUT AT THIS POINT, OR WHEN I'M DONE BECAUSE I FEEL THE "INSIDE" WHILE YOU'RE WORKING ACTUALLY TURNS OUT LOOKING THE BEST.***

Ties

Braided Ties

  • Cut yarn out of desired colors (1-3 colors) in 36" strands (9 total). Fold in half and grab at the loop that forms at the halfway point. Pull that loop through the ch-4 space from last row on Earflap. Open loop up and pull through the strands left (this makes a sort of knot to keep the braid on there and will double your strands, leaving you with 18).
  • Divide yarn into three groups, keeping in mind how the colors will come out looking, and braid until desired length. Tie another knot to finish off and cut ends so that only about an inch to an inch and a half hang down. **I usually make the braids about 5 1/2 inches long (from knot to knot) for 0-9 months and almost 9 inches long (from knot to knot) for the bigger sizes**

Regular Ties

  • Starting at the end of each earflap, chain 40 (or as long/short as you wish), SC in 4th chain from hook and the rest of the way down the chain.
  • After doing both ties, attach Tassels or Pom-Poms.

Tassels

  • Cut a piece of cardboard 3" square (or use the width of your palm). Wind a strand of yarn around the cardboard approximately 30 times (or however thick you want it) and cut it.
  • Cut a small length of yarn and insert it under all of the strands at the top of the cardboard; pull up tightly and tie securely. Leave the yarn ends long enough to attach the tassel to the beanie. Cut the yarn at the opposite end of the cardboard and then put the cardboard aside. Cut small length of yarn and, 1 inch below the top, wrap it tightly around the tassel twice; tie securely. Trim the ends and attach to beanie.

Pom-Poms

  • Cut a piece of cardboard 3" square (or use the width of your palm). Wind a strand of yarn around the cardboard approximately 30 times (or however thick you want it) and cut it. Carefully slide off of your hand or the cardboard, being careful to make sure it keeps the same shape.
  • Cut about 15" length of yarn and place behind at the middle; wrap around and tie securely, making sure it stays at the middle. Leave the yarn ends long enough to attach the pom-pom to the beanie. Cut the yarn at the opposite both ends of the pom-pom to make the edges. Trim the ends, fluff it up, and attach to the beanie.

Decorations
I made my beanie in the 3-6 month size, so the additions weren't very big. You may want to add a round or two (or use a bigger hook) for any of these patterns to be able to make them bigger for bigger beanie sizes.

Eyes
(Make 2, in white yarn, using a size F hook)
Chain 4, join to form circle
Chain 1, 8 DC in circle, join
Finish off, leaving long tail for sewing and attach to beanie

Pupils
(Make 2, in black yarn, using a size F hook)
Chain 4, join to form a circle
Chain 1, 8 SC in circle, join
Finish off, leaving long tail for sewing and attach to beanie

Bolts
(Make 2, in grey yarn, using a size I hook)
Chain 4, join to form a circle
Chain 2, 8 HDC in circle, join
Finish off, leaving long tail for sewing and attach to beanie

Stitching
Use a tapestry needle and black yarn to make the random stitched to create the "pieced together" look of Frankenstein. And give him a smile!

Yoda Beanies

I found a pattern online for a Yoda beanie and HAD to make it for my son...

And, as always, I made a baby beanie/diaper cover set too....

Beanies
The beanie was made with my General Beanie Pattern (but I added 2 rows of  "DC around" to the end of the pattern, because the yarn was thinner than usual & to make sure they cover completely over the person's ears.....you might have to do the same). The best colored yarns that I found were I Love This Yarn's Mid. Green & Light Sage.

Drink Coasters

I was recently trying to come up with something to add into some gifts that I had given people, something that wouldn't take too long... so, I found this tutorial for drink coasters. I made two sets for two different people.....

These took no time at all, so they would make a great last minute addition to a gift if you feel like you're gift is lacking. Make sure you try to do them in colors matching their living/dining room or kitchen.

As always, I edited the patterns a bit to make them make more sense and to compress them a bit....

Drink Coasters
(I used size H hook)

Chain 5, join to form a loop
Round 1: Chain 3, (DC 1, Chain 1) 7 times into the loop, DC once more, join the round
Round 2: Chain 1, SC around (into each DC and each Chain 1 space of previous round), join
Round 3: Chain 3, (DC in next, Chain 1) 16 times, DC once more, join
Round 4: Chain 1, SC around
Round 5 (this is where I used a different color yarn for the coasters with a border): (Skip next, DC 5 in next, skip next, SC in next) 7 times, skip next, DC 5 in next, skip next, join
Finish off.
